Extra Virgin

Inspired by the changing of seasons, we wanted to dine al fresco. We eagerly chose Extra Virgin as our inaugural post, fittingly for its name. Extra Virgin sits in the heart of the Crossroads district adjoined to its sister restaurant also owned by Michael Smith, a Kansas City food star.

Around half past five, we casually strolled in the front door and were immediately seated on the patio. The dark wood bar and earth-tinted walls set the scene for an Iberian experience to remember. With a lively yet relaxed atmosphere, it is reminiscent of a late afternoon lunch in Madrid.

Despite being heavily influenced by Spanish cuisine, there are traces of other Mediterranean cultures on the menu. You can find quintessential Spanish dishes such as shrimp, patatas bravas, manchego cheese and Serrano ham plates comingled with eccentric items such as braised snail ragout, grilled beef tongue and more. Seeing that this was our virgin voyage, we opted for a modest selection.

Overall, we appreciated this Americanized interpretation of Spanish cuisine. We thought the flavors needed a bit more of a kick and a little less extra virgin olive oil, but enjoyed the variety of dishes fit for both the daring and meek.

Extra Virgin is located at 1900 Main Street. Check out http://www.extravirginkc.com/ for more information.
